SERS spectroscopy and SERS imaging of Shewanella oneidensis using silver nanoparticles and nanowires.

Facile and reproducible SERS signals from Shewanella oneidensis were obtained utilizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and silver nanowires (AgNWs). Additionally, SERS images identify the distribution of SERS hot-spots. One important observation is the synergistically enhanced SERS signal when AgNPs and AgNWs are used in conjunction, due to constructively enhanced electromagnetic field.

Electromagnetic model and calculations of the surface-enhanced Raman-shifted emission from Langmuir-Blodgett films on metal nanostructures.

We present a theoretical study of the electromagnetic contribution to surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from a Langmuir-Blodgett film close to a metal surface. This macroscopic dipolar model fully accounts for the Raman-shifted emission so that meaningful SERS (electromagnetic) enhancement factors that do not depend only on the local electromagnetic field enhancement at the pump frequenc...

Experimental demonstration of surface selection rules for SERS on flat metallic surfaces.

We have measured the polarization and incident angle dependence of the Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) signal of a nile blue monolayer adsorbed on a flat gold surface. Comparisons with predictions of electromagnetic (EM) theory indicate that the molecules are predominantly adsorbed flat on the surface. These results provide the most direct demonstration of the concept of surface select...

Biosensing Based on Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy by Using Metal Nanoparticles

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising tool in the analytical science because it provides good selectivity and sensitivity without the labeling process required by fluorescence detection. This technique consists of locating the target analyte on nanometer range of roughed Au-nanoparticles. The presence of the metal nanoparticles provides a tremendous enhancement to the result...

Plasmonic nanogalaxies: multiscale aperiodic arrays for surface-enhanced Raman sensing.

The accurate and reproducible control of intense electromagnetic fields localized on the nanoscale is essential for the engineering of optical sensors based on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect. In this paper, using rigorous generalized Mie theory (GMT) calculations and a combined top-down/bottom-up nanofabrication approach, we design and experimentally demonstrate approximate...

Theory of first layer and single molecule surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)

The first layer SERS effect is usually ascribed to dynamical charge transfer (DCT) between metal and adsorbate, following a model by B. Persson. Experiments show, that there is no first layer SERS effect at smooth noble metal surfaces, in spite of the surface resistance caused by adsorbates, which is also caused by DCT according to Persson. On the other hand both SERS and SEIRA (surface enhance...
